Language Arts

The language arts curriculum offers the student the unique opportunity of developing reading skills, building a more diverse thematic vocabulary, and identifying Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes in order to enrich and broaden vocabulary.

Level A includes the reading program in language arts. The reading program has two features: first, it introduces the student to new vocabulary each week through the use of themes (e.g., aquatic life, musical instruments, currency, etc.). Second, it reinforces the weekly vocabulary through a matching book.

For instance, new vocabulary may be introduced called "aquatic animals." In the same week, a book entitled "What lives in the Sea?" is offered to the student to reinforce the use of that week's vocabulary as well as the word recognition of that vocabulary.

Levels B and C include both the reading program and, in addition, the Latin and Greek Program.

The Latin and Greek curriculum is a simple but effective way to teach students sophisticated vocabulary through the use of root, prefix, and suffix recognition. Each root is studied for a two-week period. The student easily and very quickly masters root recognition as either Latin or Greek through the use of colors. A Latin root is always introduced in red and a Greek root is always introduced in blue.

Week one introduces the student to a root and six derivative words. Graphics convey the concept of the root and a fun explanation is given in story fashion, to enhance understanding through music or simple animation.

Week two reinforces understanding and use of the root through worksheets, games, puzzles, and projects. The worksheets should be printed so they may be used by the student to enhance their comprehension and exercise their fine motor skills (writing). Parents should organize the exercises in a notebook for review and progress tracking purposes.

The Latin and Greek course of study benefits both the young reader and the older student. Worksheets have been designed so that parents can choose the appropriate level for their child. Parents can choose worksheets for students who are beginning to read and write, or choose worksheets for the fluent reader and capable writer.
