Level 2 - Beginning Vowel Sounds

This is the first level that really begins to address the ability to read and decode words. Here we gently move the student into some of the basic reading concepts by using self-running examples (with narration) and providing exercises for the student to practice with. These beginning reading fundamentals are the key to unlocking the ability to master reading skills and are part of the progressive skill building that is presented throughout Discover e-Reading.

Goals :

  • Have the student understand the left to right relationship in all text
  • Have the student know that some words must be memorized
  • Have the student know the short vowel sounds
  • Have the student know the sequence of sounds in the words
  • Have the student know that they can make words by segmenting sounds and then blending them together

Level two introduces the student to sight words, segmenting, blending and the correct pronunciation of the short vowel sounds, a,e,i,o,u. Coded stories are incorporated into the lessons to make it easy for the student to recognize the short vowel sound in every word. It is important to have the student say each sound out loud as he/she reads the text. Short vowel sounds are like the key to a door - once known and understood they unlock the word and meaning for the student.

As in the Reading Readiness level there are certain common errors and mistakes that students often make that must be corrected for the student to learn the concepts appropriately. If your student links more than one sound, correct them immediately. Say, c is not "Ca" it is simply "c". As is true in all the lessons, actually hearing the sounds when reading is paramount to learning to read. Students should be encouraged to read the sounds out loud and practice saying them until they are comfortable. Some students are still shy at this beginning level and if they refuse to read the sounds out loud, the parent or teacher should say the sounds for the student when they are writing them in the exercises and worksheets. Once the student has completed this level, they should move on to the next level, Level 3 - Fundamental Reading 1.
