Level 3 - Fundamental Reading 1

This level provides the student with a continuing focus on the fundamental reading concepts and exercises presented in the previous level two, and also introduces the student to more complex techniques. The amount of information is building and the student is getting more exposure to the skills. This level gives the student more opportunity to become more comfortable with their ability to perform segmenting and blending. The exercises and worksheets are intended to help internalize the information and apply it successfully. The student should be able to demonstrate the ability to decode the words presented in the exercises and worksheets by using segmenting and blending skills and be will achieve a good grasp of many important new skills.

Goals :

  • Introduce the student to the vowels sounds placement in words
  • Have the student know that some sounds have two letters as in ss, qu and that the letter x has a two sounds ks
  • Have the student further understand and master segmenting and blending decoding skills
  • Have the student know that some words must be memorized

Level three introduces the importance of "sequencing" in reading sounds. Until now, the student has learned that they can read text from left to right only. In level three they will learn to recognize that the placement of a sound in a word is equally important. Using VCC (short for vowel, consonant, consonant), CCVC, and CVCC word exercises reinforces this important knowledge. There are six lessons at this level and they can be quite challenging for the beginning reader. Keep in mind that the new reader is able to repeat lessons over and over again and print out the exercises and worksheets numerous times. Repetition is very important and the student must be allowed to progress at their own pace until they have a firm grasp of this information.

In this level the student will also learn that double consonants are considered one sound and should not be separated. The qu and x sounds are introduced separately to ensure that the student knows and understands how to use them in words. Segmenting and blending exercises are included as well as coded stories. The exercises are progressively more complex and introduce new information about double consonant sounds and the qu and x sound pictures. Rhyming is introduced in the coded stories as research has proven that rhyming enhances the development of verbal skills.

Once the Student has mastered the reading skills in this level they will be ready to move on to level four. Each level builds on skills and exercises from earlier levels, so once again, have the student take the time to repeat and practice the exercises enough times to be proficient. The advantage of Discover e-Reading is that the student can move at their own pace and repeat each level as often as they like, anytime, day or night.
