Level 4 - Fundamental Reading 2

This level continues to reinforce and build on the skills and the fundamental reading concepts and exercises presented in the previous level three, and also continues to introduce the student to more complex techniques. The information continues to build and the student should be getting more comfortable applying their reading skills and working on the exercises. This level provides the student the opportunity to enhance their ability to perform segmenting and more advanced blending. The exercises and worksheets are intended to help the student to internalize the information and apply it successfully. The importance of memorizing some words, or sight reading, is emphasized in this level.

Goals :

  • Introduce the student to blends ck,sh,st,ch
  • Have the student know that the same sound can have two different letters, as in oi and oy
  • Have the student further understand and master segmenting and blending decoding skills
  • Have the student know that some words should be memorized
  • Have the student know how to recognize words that rhyme

Level four uses segmenting exercises, blending exercises and sight words to teach primary reading skills. Blends are also known as diagraphs and there are four featured in this lesson, ck, sh, wh, ch. The oi,oy sound is also included. Once again rhyming is used to strengthen verbal skills. Things to watch for at this stage of reading development are: Is the student's reading labored, slow or broken up? Is the student still omitting, adding or reversing sounds in words? Does the student sometimes guess a word rather than using his/her skills to read it? If the student is showing any of the above signs that means they require extra, ongoing, review work. Proceed at the pace that the student is comfortable with and repeat lessons and exercises as often as needed for the student to master the skills.

The parent / teacher involvement can be extremely helpful at this stage. Instructions for creative ways to present the materials and present exercises are provided to help strengthen the students understanding of the concepts. The more time invested in this type of activity with the student, the faster they will learn and master the ability to read proficiently.
