Level
5 - Long Vowel Sounds
This is the final level in Beginning Reading Series that adds additional
skills to the ones previously learned. This level follows the same
method of lessons and exercises, supported with worksheets. The
long vowel sounds are especially important for the student to properly
adjust both the long and short vowel sounds in a word. Once the
student has mastered this important skill, they are ready to now
move on to the last level in this series, level six, which is a
review of everything that has been introduced up to this point.
Goals :
- Have the
student learn long vowel sounds
- Have the
student understand what changes in a word to make vowel sounds
change from short to long and vice versa
- Have the
student know how and when to use long vowel sounds
- Have the
student know how to decide which is the right sound for a specific
word
Level five introduces the student to a specific new skill - phoneme
manipulation. Phoneme manipulation is the transitioning of sound
pictures in and out of words. A student must learn when to properly
place long and short vowel sounds in a word such as "can"
and "cane." Only long vowel sounds are introduced here.
In the exercises the sentence structure becomes more complex and
the vocabulary level is varied. At times the words may seem simple
and at other times they may seem more difficult. This is to be expected.
This method is used to challenge the student's ability to intuitively
use the skill of phoneme manipulation. Most students pick this skill
up quickly after they know that sometimes "a" is short
as it cat and sometimes it is long as in cane. Once the student
has gained a command of this knowledge about long vowel sounds,
their reading is much easier and they are on their way to true reading
proficiency.
